Lastly, the concluding images depict a full brass Baxendale lamp predating the company’s sale, featuring the same peculiar bonnet extension. One might speculate that an error occurred, leading to the ordering of bonnets too short to accommodate the gauzes, though the exact circumstances remain elusive.

This raises intriguing speculation about the existence of the actual “Lady Markham Lamp” within the Markham family’s possession.

The notable collieries under the Wigan Coal and Iron Company umbrella in 1896 included the Alexandra, Bawkhouse, Bridge, Lindsay, and Meadow Pits in Haigh. Among these, Alexandra Pit employed more than 650 workers, while Lindsay Pits had over 350. In Aspull, the Crawford, Kirkless, Moor, and Woodshaw Pits collectively employed more than 1,000 individuals. Further collieries extended across Westhoughton, Hart Common, Hindley, and Standish. The Wigan Coal and Iron Company emerged as the most significant colliery owner on the Lancashire Coalfield, employing 9,000 workers during the 1920s. Their operations included the Parsonage Colliery in Leigh, where shafts sunk between 1913 and 1920 reached unprecedented depths for the era.

The company’s endeavors even extended to an iron ore mine near Dalton in Furness, known as Bercune pit, until 1898. In 1930, a significant amalgamation occurred when The Wigan Coal & Iron Co. Ltd joined forces with the Pearson & Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd to establish the Wigan Coal Corporation. At its zenith, the company employed approximately 12,300 individuals across their underground and surface operations, with this number excluding those engaged in iron ore mines or the iron works itself.

The Old Protector model 176 oil lamp, dating back to before 1911, appears to have undergone modifications around 1913 to comply with the 1911 Mines & Quarries Act. Historical research indicates that while its patent date is listed as 1913, this likely corresponds to its upgrade to adhere to the regulations set by the Mines & Quarries Act of 1911. Remarkably, this particular lamp is one of the only two Protector workman’s lamps that endured the purge of non-conforming lamps in 1911. The other survivor is the “Prestwich Protector Patent” lamp with SL or BL ignition and the Protector twin wick tube system. Notably, this vintage Type 176 lacks the twin wick system and is ignited by hand with pricker adjustment.

The sole remaining lamp apart from these two is the Type “A” aluminium officials lamp, which has retained its original form and features a single capped gauze. This lamp is characterized by its loose top design, an early locking bar, and a slide band lock.

The limited survival of these lamps can be attributed to a plausible factor: the delicate nature of the thin iron plate at the base.
