Leeds Wolf-Patterson Lamp: This lamp, a fusion of Wolf and Baxendale components dating back to approximately 1910, showcases a unique blend of features. The Baxendale lamp business was acquired by Wolf of Leeds during this era. The Wolf of Leeds Wolf-Patterson lamp is equipped with a manual wick adjustment mechanism and electronic ignition. A companion image displays a similar model, one with mechanical wick adjustment and originally electronic ignition (now absent). Both lamps boast cage bar hasps, although there’s no evidence of staples ever being affixed to the cells.

Please excuse the images’ subpar quality. Despite its outward appearance, the lamp remains in remarkable condition. It’s worth noting the corrosion surrounding the badge; in my opinion, this can be attributed to the acid in the soldering flux used to attach the badge. This phenomenon parallels the way copper plumbing reacts to surplus flux if left unattended, resulting in corrosion around the fitting.

Lastly, the concluding images depict a full brass Baxendale lamp predating the company’s sale, featuring the same peculiar bonnet extension. One might speculate that an error occurred, leading to the ordering of bonnets too short to accommodate the gauzes, though the exact circumstances remain elusive.

Pristine and never ignited, the Protector MC40 model was ingeniously crafted and patented in 1939 specifically for the Manchester Collieries consortium. Its production commenced in 1940, featuring options of iron tops or stainless steel. The lamp incorporated a flat wick oil burner complemented by a high-tension spark ignition system. Notably, the cell and cage were ingeniously integrated into a singular unit, and an internal magnetic lock was cleverly positioned within the upper rim of the cage. It’s worth mentioning that this internal locking design encountered certain challenges stemming from soot accumulation, and a significant number of these locks appear to have been subsequently removed.

The J H Rothwell aluminium and brass utility lamp was crafted by W E Teale from Swinton, and it bore the badge of the former. J H Rothwell, a prominent ironmonger in the Rochdale vicinity, catered to a wide array of ironmongery needs, inclusive of mining provisions. The region was dotted with coal and mineral mines, some of which were massive stone mines.

This lamp boasted a solitary copper gauze, an adjustable ceramic burner with a pricker wick, and an oil-based mechanism. Its condition remained superb. The lamp was procured in Derbyshire, an area replete with diverse mineral mines. In this region, lamp locking wasn’t necessary.

Included images show a full brass variation of the Rothwell lamp. It’s worth noting that Rothwell also engaged in the production and distribution of similar lamp models to other enterprises.

A Personal Favorite: Undoubtedly, this stands as one of my cherished possessions. A 5-inch reproduction of The Lady Markham Lamp, meticulously crafted by Edward Barnard & Sons of London in 1906. Edward Barnard & Sons boast the distinction of being the world’s oldest registered silversmiths, tracing their origins back to around 1680. Their craftsmanship was sought after by royalty and the affluent. Each aspect of this lamp is adorned with hallmarks, a testament to its exceptional quality. The lamp exudes a sense of unparalleled craftsmanship.

Lady Lucy Bertram Markham, the namesake of this lamp, was wedded to Sir Arthur Bazil Markham—a prominent member of the Nottinghamshire Markham family, proprietors of Markham pits, ironworks, and the renowned Markham engineering facility. Throughout her life, Lady Markham dedicated herself to fundraising endeavors for the less fortunate and the families of miners. She orchestrated auctions featuring vintage miners’ lamps to generate funds for her noble causes. While images of her engaging in such an auction are available on Google, they have been subject to copyright claims by Alamy. In one of these images, a gleaming, full-sized miners’ lamp is visible in the background, possibly composed of solid silver. This raises intriguing speculation about the existence of the actual “Lady Markham Lamp” within the Markham family’s possession.

This intricately detailed replica stands at 5 inches in height, weighing 5 ounces. It continues to captivate with its meticulous artistry and craftsmanship.

This early J H Naylor lamp, designed in the Clanny type, was once in the possession of The Wigan Coal & Iron Company. The inception of The Wigan Coal and Iron Company came about when John Lancaster’s collieries on the Lancashire Coalfield were acquired by Lord Lindsay, Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, who also owned Haigh Colliery. This acquisition took place in 1865. The company boasted ownership of collieries spread across Haigh, Aspull, Standish, Westhoughton, Blackrod, Westleigh, and St. Helens. Additionally, they operated substantial furnaces and iron-works in proximity to Wigan, along with the Manton Colliery in Nottinghamshire.

The notable collieries under the Wigan Coal and Iron Company umbrella in 1896 included the Alexandra, Bawkhouse, Bridge, Lindsay, and Meadow Pits in Haigh. Among these, Alexandra Pit employed more than 650 workers, while Lindsay Pits had over 350. In Aspull, the Crawford, Kirkless, Moor, and Woodshaw Pits collectively employed more than 1,000 individuals. Further collieries extended across Westhoughton, Hart Common, Hindley, and Standish. The Wigan Coal and Iron Company emerged as the most significant colliery owner on the Lancashire Coalfield, employing 9,000 workers during the 1920s. Their operations included the Parsonage Colliery in Leigh, where shafts sunk between 1913 and 1920 reached unprecedented depths for the era.

The company’s endeavors even extended to an iron ore mine near Dalton in Furness, known as Bercune pit, until 1898. In 1930, a significant amalgamation occurred when The Wigan Coal & Iron Co. Ltd joined forces with the Pearson & Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd to establish the Wigan Coal Corporation. At its zenith, the company employed approximately 12,300 individuals across their underground and surface operations, with this number excluding those engaged in iron ore mines or the iron works itself.

This lamp, in remarkably well-preserved state, features an original blue oxide coating on the bonnet. It is a fully authentic specimen, complete with a stamped production number “No178” on the Cell, Cage, and Protector outer wick tube. The “58/” marking signifies its production year as 1958. This lamp was acquired through an online auction hosted by The British Heart Foundation Charity Shop. HL lamps are rather uncommon, and finding one in such impeccable condition is exceedingly rare.

The lamp’s cell offers wind wick adjustment, while the cage bars boast an outward taper and a magnetic lock (although this feature is currently disabled).

These lamps were employed until approximately 1960, likely not within the NCB mines when there were more than 30 individuals working below ground. The wick adjustment process involved rotating the fuel cell vertically to achieve the desired height. The locking flap underwent modification to accommodate the bars, leaving it elevated about a quarter-inch above the cage. The lamp used the Original Protector system, reminiscent of the old Type 1A utility lamp, as well as the antiquated W E Teale No. 1 and No. 2 models, along with the former Protector No. 1 iterations.

The Old Protector model 176 oil lamp, dating back to before 1911, appears to have undergone modifications around 1913 to comply with the 1911 Mines & Quarries Act. Historical research indicates that while its patent date is listed as 1913, this likely corresponds to its upgrade to adhere to the regulations set by the Mines & Quarries Act of 1911. Remarkably, this particular lamp is one of the only two Protector workman’s lamps that endured the purge of non-conforming lamps in 1911. The other survivor is the “Prestwich Protector Patent” lamp with SL or BL ignition and the Protector twin wick tube system. Notably, this vintage Type 176 lacks the twin wick system and is ignited by hand with pricker adjustment.

The sole remaining lamp apart from these two is the Type “A” aluminium officials lamp, which has retained its original form and features a single capped gauze. This lamp is characterized by its loose top design, an early locking bar, and a slide band lock.

The limited survival of these lamps can be attributed to a plausible factor: the delicate nature of the thin iron plate at the base.

Extremely rare Protector GR6S prototype marked as 66 / G (from 1966, Garforth). Although the GR6 was initially introduced in 1964, it quickly encountered an issue with its outer wick tubes, made of brass, which began to develop fractures during extended usage. This predicament necessitated a solution. The ultimate fix involved substituting the brass tubes with stainless steel ones for the outer and inner wick tubes. However, recalling and converting the existing lamps wasn’t straightforward due to the integration of brass outer tubes into the base plate casting. Consequently, machining was required to remove the brass tubes, creating a recess to accommodate the new stainless steel tubes and a rubber O-ring. Converted units were marked with a post stamp “S” on the badge, indicating completion of the modification, while subsequent models were labelled as GR6S from the factory (with “S” denoting Stainless). Observing the stainless steel inner wick tube, it becomes evident that its production costs were substantial, which likely contributed to its eventual abandonment.

Stilfontein Mine, South Africa – A Day in the Life of a Miner… Early eighties. (written in mining language)

Why do you get up so early every day? It’s really not necessary… You know the warehouse door only opens at eight. My wife has been asking this question for some time. I don’t really have an answer… Then I realize… The power of habit… Getting up at half-past four in the morning for work is part of my existence. Adapting to my new life is still something I have to process… The years-long profession as a miner has left its mark…

Get your ass in gear before you miss the ‘cage’. You know they won’t wait for you… My hard hat is still half crooked on my head as I attach the heavy battery of the caplamp to my mine belt… Quickly draw my Wolf safety lamp… My little helper is already waiting to help me with the bags of ‘ignitercord’ and ‘fuses’… The sun is just starting to break through… The cage is packed again… Old Matokwan (nickname meaning marijuana, because he probably smoked it at times or smelled of it) smells bad from the rum as he breathes on me… A prayer murmur as we’re about to descend… the Banksman rings the bells and the cage starts moving… Faster into the depths… I hear the wind whistle through the lattice-like shaft… Every bunton passed creates a whirlwind inside… I hang almost like a bird on the rail bars of the top deck of the cage… Somewhere a shot is fired… Those fat fingers of Uncle Faan have found their mark in the dark… Matokwan collapses on the floor… He curses and swears… A bunch of men laugh… another one kicks like a mule into thin air as someone pinches him at the back of the thigh… I hope your woman packed enough sandwiches for both of us… My wife is angry at me again… I hear old Skébol (nickname meaning short length drill rod/steel probably because he a short fella, or he is less endowed) ask… Probably drank too much last night… comes an answer…

The cage comes to a halt on our level with a jerk… We swing up and down in the shaft for a few seconds before the onsetter can climb out… The station is full of nightshift workers waiting to depart… I quickly ask my ‘nightshift cleaner’ if there were any problems… There was a hanging wall incident… The panel is not clean… No ‘rig’ holes… a few packs have also been blown out… Now I’m swearing in foreign languages…

The click-clack of the four-wheel ‘bicycle’ on the tracks is rhythmic in my ears… I take out a cigarette from my ‘skwam’ (rubber pouch attached to waist belt), a Gunston (unfiltered toasted and rough tasting cigarette) for you Makrap? (nickname meaning he’s always scratching)…. You know I don’t smoke your cigarettes… Lexington (a cigarette that smelled like old underground workings and which was difficult to detect when smelling, as it was illegal to smoke underground in fiery mines) is the best… A hundred thousand miners can’t be wrong….

At the waiting area my workers are already waiting for me… Some as early as four o’clock… Josias and the other Team leaders have already marked time and attendance on their gang cards… for present workers’ and each individuals punch card have also already been collected and locked away… I quickly read the night shift communication report… This one marked with an X… Unsafe hanging wall… Will first go investigate there… Josias… get the men ready. We have to replace pipes in panel four today. John… arrange for mat packs in your panel… You’ve blown out again… Wedge that stuff properly ffs!! Those men of yours have soft porridge or shit in their hands… The Fanakalo (african mining language) rolls off my tongue… have also learned a whole bunch of swear words in from them in their languages (Zulu, Xhosa, Sesotho, Setswana)…

The early inspection goes smoothly. The big rocks have already been finely blasted or hammered down to pass through the grizzly bars ontop of the tips feeding the boxholes. The scrapers are already busy and the Sullivan double drum and Pillman compressed air winches are humming away… the gullies are empty, except for the broken ore piled in them, with the scraper ropes now whiplashing against the hanging wall as the winch pulls tight on them while dragging the scraper. This panel must get cleaned… must blast it. Mataliaan (nickname for boss) is visiting me today. Wimpie has already sworn me to death. You’re not getting out of this hole (mine) today until this panel is blasted… from a beloved but also strict shift boss on the mine… A block of a man with a heart of gold… He has already won an award after he saved a man’s life from certain death…

I’m already busy getting my “fuses” ready for the blast when I hear Mataliaan’s roaring voice… I hope all your machines are drilling.. I want to take a little look at your drill hole marking work and spacings… Then I see the cans of spray paint in his hands.. I want to see how this stuff works he says.. That fat crayon you guys have been using till now is going to disappear.. No more sneaky barbecues with this stuff on Saturdays… I hope your places are up to standard and clean, you know what happens when I get water in my boots.. It’s time again for you to be charged and to donate a few Rands to welfare again…

The ‘pinchbar’ in my hand shakes as I ‘bar’ down the rock.. My first ‘charge’ for the day… You want to kill people.. I hear that thunderous voice.. Why is this packing line so skewed? Can’t you draw a straight line first… Why isn’t this ‘socket’ plugged.. Why is this panel running so skewed? Wimpie (person’s name) writes everything in his notebook… Today is not my day…

Josias!!… Have you made sure that ‘stay-a-lite’ is burning… also set the other panels on fire.. We are late!! I hope Mataliaan is already home or maybe with a few men at the Club… The first shots are already booming while I climb down the ‘Traveling way’.. Shock waves and a gust of wind pluck at my sweat-soaked denim.. I am bare chested and my ribs are almost sticking out.. But I am proud.. I have blasted.. I am part of an elite guard… I am a miner!!!

Go wash your arse so you can get home.. Your wife has been waiting for you for a long time.. Will look at all the charges against you tomorrow. . My logbook is almost full… Wimpie closes his logbook.. I just have enough time to see that there is only one charge (fine for breach of regulations)… The little remains of the sun is already turning red on the horizon… Tomorrow a new day….
