A Personal Favorite: Undoubtedly, this stands as one of my cherished possessions. A 5-inch reproduction of The Lady Markham Lamp, meticulously crafted by Edward Barnard & Sons of London in 1906. Edward Barnard & Sons boast the distinction of being the world’s oldest registered silversmiths, tracing their origins back to around 1680. Their craftsmanship was sought after by royalty and the affluent. Each aspect of this lamp is adorned with hallmarks, a testament to its exceptional quality. The lamp exudes a sense of unparalleled craftsmanship.

Lady Lucy Bertram Markham, the namesake of this lamp, was wedded to Sir Arthur Bazil Markham—a prominent member of the Nottinghamshire Markham family, proprietors of Markham pits, ironworks, and the renowned Markham engineering facility. Throughout her life, Lady Markham dedicated herself to fundraising endeavors for the less fortunate and the families of miners. She orchestrated auctions featuring vintage miners’ lamps to generate funds for her noble causes. While images of her engaging in such an auction are available on Google, they have been subject to copyright claims by Alamy. In one of these images, a gleaming, full-sized miners’ lamp is visible in the background, possibly composed of solid silver. This raises intriguing speculation about the existence of the actual “Lady Markham Lamp” within the Markham family’s possession.

This intricately detailed replica stands at 5 inches in height, weighing 5 ounces. It continues to captivate with its meticulous artistry and craftsmanship.

Introducing the Pristine Protector Type A (Aluminium) Surveyors / Officials Lamp: A rare gem in mint condition. This lamp stands out for its lightweight aluminium build, weighing 785 grams as opposed to 1420 grams for its brass and steel counterparts. Designed for surveying and official tasks, it’s both sturdy and easy to handle.

Key features include side lighting (SL), twin copper gauzes, a lead rivet lock, and a “Cell wind” wick adjustment mechanism. The filler’s locking flap is cleverly positioned a quarter inch above the cage ring, enabling simple wick tuning by winding the cell up or down.

Although Andy came across three of these lamps within two weeks, having sold the others (likely to Australia), this lamp remains an exceptional find. With its history and functionality, the Protector Type A (Aluminium) Lamp is a collector’s dream – a tribute to both craftsmanship and exploration.
