Where to find the marks
- Maker’s plate: usually on the vessel or the bonnet. Look for a town as well as a name.
- Type or model: often stamped under the base, like the “B7” on a Patterson.
- Pit and lamp number: on a brass plate or tag, and it should match the lamp check.
- Approval marks: British lamps from after 1911 may carry approval numbers. Note them, then ask in the group.
Then look the maker up in Makers & Marks A–Z, and read what to check for fakes.
